This is my lab report that I wrote for my Biology 105 class. My report was called "Detecting Biologically Important Macromolecules in Food Samples". In it I discussed the four types of organic molecules called macromolecules that are in all living things. These four macromolecules are called Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, and Nucleic Acids. I also talked about how one can use the reagent tests in order to test what macromolecules are in the foods we eat. The objective of this lab is to identify which macromolecules are present in different foods by testing the foods with four different reagent tests. I believe this helps me to fulfill Information Literacy levels 1, 2, and 3 and also Information Synthesis level 1. Information Literacy Level 1: “Develops ability to access information effectively, efficiently, and critically,” Level 2: “Demonstrates knowledge of the ethical use of information,” and Level 3: “Develops ability to evaluate and incorporate selected information into knowledge base.” Information Synthesis Level 1:”Develops ability to organize others’ ideas.” For this lab report I had to do an experiment that took two lab periods and conduct outside research. In order to conduct outside research, I had to use a scholarly source such as google scholar or the MNSU library to find previous experiments done on the same thing or on something similar. You know a site is scholarly when it is an article found on a site that publishes reviewed articles (Info Literacy, level 2). These sources included work done by the lab director and other scholarly sources found on sites like google scholar (Info Literacy, level 3). After getting all of my research and data collected, I was expected to put it all together in a cohesive manner (Info Synthesis, level 1). In order to put it together correctly, I had to put the information together in a way that everyone could understand what I did in the experiment by using the components of research (Info Literacy, level 1 and 2). In the future, I hope to continue to do research like this in my field.
