Attached above is the abstract that my partner and I submitted for the Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS). Since we used animals in our research, I am unable to post our final poster that we used to present for the URS. It is unethical to show video/pictures of experiments that use animals. My research used Green Anole Lizards as the subject and since they were injected in this process, it is unethical to share this information publicly online (Info Literacy, level 2). The abstract goes over some of the background of our research and why it is important to humans. It also discusses what we are trying to research through our project and how we did it. I believe the experience of making our poster and presenting our research findings for the URS helps me to achieve levels 1-4 of Original Research and levels 1-3 of Dissemination of Results. Original Research Level 1: “Identifies research question or creative proposal that extends knowledge or practice of their discipline,” Level 2: “Develops research question or creative proposal that extends knowledge or practice of their discipline,” Level 3: “Conducts primary research or engages in creative practice that extends knowledge or practice of their discipline,” and Level 4: “Exhibits completed research or creative work that extends knowledge or practice of their discipline.” Dissemination of Results Level 1: “Identifies appropriate venue for dissemination,” Level 2: “Prepares and submits an abstract or proposal for the appropriate venue,” and Level 3: “Disseminates the results of their research or creative achievement.” At the beginning of this year, I was given a research project to do over the year with a partner (Original Research, level 1). We had to make a proposal early in the year to turn into the undergraduate research center in order to receive a grant (Dissemination of Results, level 1). This required us to write about what our research was, why it was important, how we would do it, our expected outcomes and a timeline of events (Original Research, level 2). This part of the experience helped me to analyze my project as a whole and summarize it for the purpose of others to understand what we were doing. After we received a grant, we began doing our project which included doing many different experiments including injecting lizards, measuring LH blood levels, etc. (Original Research, level 3). This was my first time being such a big part of a research project. I enjoyed having a role in the project and learning techniques in the lab. At the beginning of spring semester, we created and submitted an abstract for our project for the URS (Dissemination of Results, level 2). This abstract made my partner and I look at our experiments, findings and project as a whole in order to write a complete and concise summary of our findings. Once our experiments were completed, we took all the data we had and analyzed it. We then made our final poster to use to present at the URS that included background, methods, results (with lots of figures), conclusions and future studies (original research, level 4). Finally, we presented (online due to Covid-19) our project and results for the URS (Dissemination of Results, level 3). This whole experience helped me learn how to conduct ethical research and present it for others in my field and outside of it. In the future, my experience with research will be extremely helpful. Going into the medical field, research is very important to have knowledge on in order to possibly conduct it as well as be able to understand it. In order to understand new findings in the medical world, you have to understand how research works, so you can understand their methods, and how reliable their new findings are.
