Attached above, I have a reflection of my time participating in research. I started research my junior year of college at MNSU and I believe it was very important in building my leadership skills. Our task as a research group was to work under a graduate student and help him with his project. This project involved many smaller experiments to help us draw conclusions for our final project. This experience and essay help me to achieve level 3 of Teams and level 4 of Values. Teams level 3: “Reflects upon roles within group and team settings” and Values level 4: “Uses personal theories and values of leadership within campus or community organizations.” Through this experience, I was able to recognize that I am an authentic and extroverted leader. This knowledge helped me recognize my position and strengths in group or team settings. For example, I believe that I brought a lot of positivity and a readiness to learn into the lab by leading by example. Being positive benefitted the group because I was able to be the person in the group that helped keep everyone’s spirits up when things weren’t working out. I also believe that since I was really passionate about what I was doing, it solidified my role in the group as an authentic leader and someone who will lead by example (Teams, level 3). Although I was already aware that I was an extroverted leader before this experience, I think that being this type of leader helped me stick to one of my biggest values regarding leadership. It is my belief that if I don't share my ideas, myself and others will never know my full potential and what I am capable of. I truly feel I stuck by that throughout this experience by bringing my ideas I had to the table whenever I had new ideas (Values, level 4). My leadership philosophy will be useful as a Pediatrician because my positivity and extroverted leadership style will help make my patients and their parents feel more comfortable with me as a leader.
