I wrote this essay for my FYEX-honors course. The purpose of this assignment was to write about different leadership styles, what leadership style or styles I have and how different leading techniques/styles might affect how I work with others. I discuss how I am an authentic leader, extroverted leader, and an upholder. Each one of these styles plays a part in what kind of leader I am. An authentic leader is someone that leads with everything they have in them including their head and their heart. An extroverted leader is someone who is not afraid to voice their opinions and ideas. Lastly, an upholder is someone who is a planner and is self-motivated. This fulfills Teams and Values level 1 and Values level 2 because I identify my personal leadership values, the different roles in a group setting, and how my strengths and weaknesses effect working in teams. Teams level 1: “Identifies various types of roles within group and team settings.” Values level 1: “Identifies personal leadership values” and level 2: “Reflects upon personal leadership strengths and weaknesses.” I have learned how to continue to be an extroverted leader without overpowering others in the group that I am working with by voicing my opinions but being sure that I listen to the opinions of every person in my group (Values, level 1). I've been able to do this by asking some of the quieter people in the group their thoughts frequently to make sure that everyone is involved. I see this as a strength because as a leader, you need to recognize the way other’s in your group work in order to have good teamwork (Values, level 2). Recognizing the way in which other’s work is imperative as a leader so it's important to stay patient and understanding of people working differently than myself. Though sometimes it’s difficult when others work differently than me, it can also be helpful. Those who work differently can assume different roles in a group. Those who are more creative could work best in a role where they can physically make something for a project or someone who is less creative, may be good in a role like researching or writing a paper (Teams, level 1). I learned that it is really vital, for myself, to make sure that I don't let my upholder tendencies get in the way of greatness, meaning if someone else has a more laid back approach to something, I'll be sure that I don't let it bother me too much and that I find a way to still work cohesively with that individual (Values, level 1 and 2). Overall, I learned that there are so many different ways to lead and none of them are the "right" or "wrong" way. In the future, it will be important that I remember the different styles of leadership and respect that some individuals may lead differently than I do.
