In order to become the leader, I am today, I had to learn from other leaders in my life. Some of the leaders I have looked up to the most are my mother, sister, youth group leader and my current boss Annie. My boss has shown me what true leadership in a workplace looks like. In the spring, I conducted an interview with Annie about her job and responsibilities at the group home. I then reflected on the interview, my experience at my job and how it relates to the leadership competency. Annie’s leadership style is very much based off of doing what’s best for our clients and the staff. In order to do that, she is constantly checking in on both parties making sure she is doing everything she can to take care of the clients and the staff’s well-being. I took that part of her leadership style and incorporated it into my own. I believe that this experience helps me to achieve level 4 of both values and teams. Values level 4: “Uses personal theories and values f leadership within campus or community organizations” and Teams level 4: “Articulates a general leadership philosophy to guide future collaboration within groups.”I use my leadership philosophy often during my group projects and meetings. Especially during times like these (with Covid-19), I find it’s helpful to check in on the well-being of my classmates before starting a project. For example, I am currently in a Spanish course in which I have to meet and have a conversation with a group once a week. Before we start the conversation in Spanish, I try to check in on how everyone is feeling, both in life in general and about the conversation we are about to have. If people have questions or concerns about the project, I try to help them understand the project more clearly. It is important to me that everyone feels comfortable before the conversation starts because this helps me lead the group and have a productive conversation. I also use this philosophy when I am at work and I try to check in on my clients and my co-workers because that helps our shifts run much more smoothly (Values and Teams, level 4). Over the course of my years at MNSU, I think I have realized that there is a lot to be a leader. I have started to use my personal philosophy more and more because I have recognized that it helps make others feel more comfortable with you leading and that is so important (Values, level 4). I plan to continue to use this philosophy in the future in medical school and in my career. As a Pediatrician, it will be so important to make my patients and the parents of my patients feel comfortable, like they can trust me as a leader in their life (Teams, level 4).
